8 Do-it-Yourself Paving Tips
As a supplier of Orlando brick pavers, we understand that few things can beat the satisfaction of taking on a large scale home project on your own and paving projects are no exception. There are plenty of fun projects that can add something special to your home like patios, walkways, and pool decks. However, before you jump into your project, there are 8 important things you should consider and do to save yourself a lot of frustration in the future.
- Know your utility lines – call your local utilities provider to have them mark the plumbing, electric, and cable lines located where you want to work.
- Create a solid base – make sure you create a level and smooth platform to place your pavers.
- Use a wacker plate compactor or tamper on each layer of material.
- Protect against weeds – once you’ve cleared the area of grass and other plants, place landscaping cloth before you place the sand base to prevent weeds and grass from popping up between the cracks of your pavers.
- Plan for drainage – while your overall paving should be level, there should be a slight slope away from your home’s foundation that will let water flow smoothly off the paving. The slope should drop a quarter inch every two feet of distance.
- Keep it together – plan to create a tight edge at the end of your pavers to minimize the amount of movement as people move around on it. You can keep it together using a cement lip or metal edging.
- Pack in the cracks – once the pavers are placed in position, fill in the cracks with sand to minimize shifting. The simplest way to do this is to spread the sand on the pavers and use a broom to sweep them in the cracks.
- Have backup pavers – keep some extra pavers offhand in the event that the ones that set in place become damaged and need to be replaced.
