Are There Dinosaurs in my Granite?

Granite is a unique and luxurious way to beautify your home. It’s durable, recyclable, impervious to most elements and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The material is also highly coveted and increases the resale value of your home. So, why is an Orlando masonry product so expensive? Could it be because there are dinosaur fossils in your granite?

Granite is a rock that is mined from around the world. The rock is formed by slowly-cooling pockets of magma that were trapped beneath the earth’s surface. Most scientists will say it is very unlikely for fossils of any kind of be found in granite because granite forms at great depths, under conditions that would obliterate organic tissue. So, not only is the formation process a bit harsh, but the granite remains molten for millions of years before cooling.

It is possible for the native sedimentary rock possessing fossils to be introduced to magma. This native rock could break off and be engulfed in the magma, forming a larger rock around the fossilized rock. This would put a fossil, in a sedimentary rock, in a piece of granite used in Orlando masonry, but this is still very rare and unlikely.

So the simple answer to the question, “Are there dinosaurs in my granite?” is, unfortunately, no. However if you’re looking for that primitive look in your Orlando masonry, limestone is the material for you. Limestone blocks have been known to hold fossils of all shapes and sizes, such as a 40 million year old fossilized whale, found in a block of Egyptian limestone in Italy.

Everyone with a granite fireplace, or countertop has probably suspended their faces 2 inches above its surface, trying to excavate fossil remains. I know I have! Dinosaurs excite and amaze us, and if our counters are as old as the dinosaurs, then of course we hope to have even a smidgen of their legacy encased in the stone.

While our granite pieces may not hold the remains from the Jurassic period, they are still unique and beautiful. The Orlando masonry experts at Bedrock Industries provide a variety of high quality natural stone products. Visit our website or contact us today for more information about our services.
