Fall in Love Without Falling on Your Face–Common Paving Mistakes

Orlando pavers provide our homes with beautiful and customizable walkways. But sometimes, when installed incorrectly or with seasonal changes and geological shifts, those paved surfaces can become a bit of a tripping hazard. As little as a quarter of an inch difference in a single piece of the paved surfaces puzzle can cause a trip. When we trip, we don’t just lose balance, our momentum causes the body to continue forward, possibly into another object or down to the paved surface.

Like any surface, paving requires expert care. We’re not here to bash all the DIY-ers out there, but for the best results an Orlando paving company should be contacted for the installation of your paved surfaces. Here are some of the most common paving mistakes that can occur from non-professional installation, which make pavers a dangerous obstacle and tripping hazard:

  • Uneven Pavers.  More like an obstacle course than a walkway, when pavers are uneven or arranged to jut out at different heights, they are a major hazard. What DIY-ers may not understand is that pavers are subject to moving due to varying weather conditions, geological events and type of base material. Certain base materials, or shallow and uneven bases will cause unevenness. A skilled paver will know how to properly lay an even paved surface over any material.

  • Shifting Pavers.  Garden gnomes are moving your pathway throughout the night, and you want it to stop. Gravel and sand bases can escape or wash out from under the pavers, causing edges to separate.

  • Pavers are Settled. When the ground under a paved surface has not been filled in properly it will cause your paved surface to sag or settle. The ground where a paved walkway or driveway will be installed must be properly compacted before beginning. Otherwise you risk your walkway being more like a roller coaster than a walkway.

  • Water Puddling is Occurring. Pavers are meant to naturally filter water, so if your pavers are holding water like a basin you have one of two problems. One, the base was not installed at the proper pitch–or two, the base was not compacted correctly and is now settling, causing a small retention pond at the end of your driveway. This area must be pulled up, base must be added and additional compaction must occur before pavers are reinstated.

We all enjoy a good DIY project every now and again, but some projects are meant for professionals. Laying pavers is a long and difficult process.
