Masonry Supplies Checklist

You need to know what type of fireplace you want to build before beginning construction, but there are a few masonry supplies that all outdoor fireplace projects will need:

Cinder Blocks – Most outdoor fireplaces use cinder blocks to serve as support for the construction of the project. Some outdoor fireplace designs use cinder block as the material for the fireplace itself.

Pea Gravel – It doesn’t matter if you construct your fireplace from cinder block, brick or stone, the completed fireplace is going to be extremely heavy, and if you don’t prepare the ground where you want the fireplace to reside, it will sink or settle, so you need to build a base to help support the weight of the fireplace. Typically, this involves digging a base–follow the local regulations on how deep this base needs to be–and the soil needs to be compacted down. After this, it is a good idea to fill the base with several inches of pea gravel and tamp it down again.

Concrete – Concrete is an essential part of building the base. How much concrete you need is determined by the area in which you live. This is the next layer above the pea gravel in most outdoor fireplace construction projects.

Mortar Mix – Whether you construct the fireplace with brick, stone or block, you will need mortar to hold the project together.

Fire Brick – Fire brick will be needed in order to construct the firebox as well as refractory mortar, both of which is designed to handle the temperatures generated by fire.

Masonry Tools – Some of the masonry tools you will need include a wheelbarrow, a 4’ Level, a hammer, 2 ladders, a big square, a tape measure. There are many other tools you will need, but the ones you need depends on the type of outdoor fireplace you are constructing. Refer to the plan you are using to construct the fireplace or speak with a masonry expert to make sure you have all of the right tools and supplies for the project.
