How to Prevent Edge Failure with Your Pavers
If you’re considering laying some Orlando pavers for a new patio, you will need to consider the paver edging. You need to ensure that you’re keeping the edges of pavers contained to make sure you’re maintaining the interlock between each of the pavers. When you lay pavers, one of the parts of achieving interlock is by focusing the coarse sand into the joints of the pavers. If you don’t restrain the pavers around the perimeter, they will end up separating over time.
In order to install proper edging with your Orlando pavers, follow these steps:
- Step 1: When you install your paver base, you need to make sure that you extend the base at least eight inches beyond the pavers perimeter. If you don’t follow this step, the edging spikes will be placed in soil, and when it gets cold, the soil will end up pushing your spikes up and out of the ground, which will make your edging fail.
- Step 2: You have to make sure that your paver edging is directly on top of your paver base. If the edging ends up on top of the sand, then the sand will erode and cause the pavers to settle, disrupting your perfect design. In order to accomplish this, you can either install the edging first or you can install the edging last. If you install it last, make sure to use a trowel to run the edge of the pavers all the way down to the gravel base.
- Step 3: Lastly, make sure you install the ten inch metal spikes every eight inches apart. Try not to use galvanized spikes because they end up rusting and are more difficult to remove.
