Which is More Cost-Effective: Concrete or Pavers?

With summer fast approaching, the construction of pools is on the rise. After you have decided on all pool-related details, the next step in creating your pool is to install the concrete around it. But, it doesn’t stop there. You must decide whether concrete or pavers is best for the area surrounding your pool. The easiest way to make this decision is based on your budget, but there are other factors to consider such as how many years you are expecting to use it.

Concrete surfaces around pools are both durable and cost-friendly. If you are feeling artistic, there is also the option to paint or stamp your concrete, which adds to the overall ambiance. Since concrete is susceptible to cracking in cold climates, it might not be the ideal surface for northern states. However we live in sunny, warm Florida, so cracking wouldn’t be as dramatic. Pavers on the other hand, are a nice alternative to the traditional concrete. They are small individual pieces of concrete, brick or natural stone that are placed side by side, which offers a solid surface. The installation process of pavers is more difficult compared to the traditional pouring of concrete. Therefore, if installed incorrectly, they can become uneven.

As with any important decision, there are pros and cons, but it is up to the pool owner to decide which is material fits the needs of their pool (and their wallet!). If the number one priority is cost, than the obvious decision is to go with traditional concrete. Stamped and colored concrete is more expensive, but still beats the price of pavers. It is important to note that concrete fades over time, while pavers do not. However, pavers are costly and there is the additional charge for customizing the cuts.

For long-term durability, choose pavers over traditional concrete. If the surface of the paver gets damaged, it is far easier to replace one paver rather than a bunch of cracks in the concrete. Pavers and cost far less to maintain, but are a lot more expensive to install upfront. Therefore, if you are looking for the cheapest price upfront, go with concrete. If you want long-term durability, which will cost less than traditional concrete in the future, go with pavers.
